The short out inspection method for PCB circuit board

There are many kinds of faults that can occur during the assembly process of PCB boards. Short out is one of the common situations. So how do we check the board for a short circuit? Here are some of the methods we use:

multilayer pcb fabrication

1. If it is artificial welding, it is necessary to develop a good habit. First, visually inspect the PCB board before soldering, and use a multimeter to check whether the critical circuit (especially the power supply and the ground) is short-circuited. Second, use a multimeter every time one chip is soldered. Measure whether the power supply and ground are short-circuited;

2. Open the PCB pic on the computer, illuminate the short-circuited network, and see where it is closest to it, the easiest part to connect. Pay special attention to the internal short circuit of the IC.

3. Once a short circuit is found, take a board to sew the line (especially for single/double pcb board). After secant, each part of the function block is energized separately, and some parts are excluded.

4. Use short-circuit positioning analyzer, such as: Singapore PROTEQ CB2000 short-circuit tracker, Hong Kong Lingzhi QT50 short-circuit tracker, UK POLAR ToneOhm950 multi-layer circuit short-circuit detector.

5. If there is a BGA chip, since all the solder joints are invisible by the chip cover, and it is a multi-layer board (more than 4 layers), it is better to separate the power supply of each chip at the time of design, and connect it with a magnetic bead or a 0-ohm resistor. In this way, when the power supply and the ground are short-circuited, the magnetic bead detection is disconnected, and it is easy to locate a certain chip.

6. You must be careful when soldering small-sized surface-mount capacitors, especially for power supply filter capacitors (103 or 104), which can easily cause a short circuit between the power supply and ground. Of course, sometimes when encounter with the bad fortune, the capacitor itself is short-circuited. So the best way is to check the capacitance before soldering.

Above are the common methods for testing a short circuit on a circuit board. All the boards produced by Fast turn PCB will undergo strict quality control to ensure that the quality meets the customer's standards before shipping. We will be your reliable board supplier.
